- Rock & Roll Wheel-a-thon Benefits
People With Disabilities
-
-
- SHREVEPORT, LA, OCTOBER 28 - To celebrate National
Disability Awareness Month, New Horizons Independent
Living Center is proud to host the 1st Annual Rock &
Roll Wheel-a-thon on Saturday, October 28, at the Charles
& Marie Hamel Memorial Park, from 9:00 a.m. until
6:00 p.m.
-
- This fundraising event will enable New Horizons to
expand its programs and services for people with disabilities,
while providing a unique opportunity to educate the
Ark-La-Tex about disability issues.
-
- The Wheel-a-thon will be held on the one mile walking
trail at the Charles & Marie Hamel Memorial Park
on Clyde Fant Parkway, beside the Red River. Attendees
may park at Shreve City and take the free shuttle to
the event. Participants will use manual wheelchairs
to navigate the trail after seeking pledges based on
the distance they are able to travel. There will also
be an obstacle course in which participants will experience
various disabilities after seeking pledges based on
how many obstacles they can successfully navigate. Throughout
the day, local bands and musicians have donated their
time and talents to entertain the crowd.
-
- Members of the community are invited to participate
and show their support for the over 40 million U.S.
citizens who experience disability. Prizes will be given
to participants for various accomplishments, including
a prize for collecting the most pledges. Anyone seeking
additional information about attending, participating,
volunteering or sponsoring should contact Lyndsey Young
at New Horizons.

- • PRESS RELEASE FOR NEW
HORIZONS INDEPENDENT LIVING CENTER
- Community Forum will be a "Declaration
of Independence" for People with Disabilities
-
-
- MANSFIELD, LA, JAN. 20 - New Horizons Independent
Living Center and LaCAN (Louisiana Citizens for Action
Now) will host a community forum on Wednesday, January
25th, at 1:00 p.m. at the Old Church Inn, located at
103 Jefferson Street. While many issues facing community
members with disabilities will be discussed, one question
will be on everyone's mind: Is Mansfield curbing
civil rights by not cutting curbs?
-
- Citizens with disabilities in Mansfield have reported
issues with accessing their community. These issues
include lack of accessible pedestrian pathways, insufficient
or nonexistent curb cuts along sidewalks, and unsafe
lane crossings. More concerning are the attitudinal
barriers posed by civic leaders. Reportedly, Mansfield's
police department has discouraged people with disabilities
from utilizing public roadways, informing them that
they will be arrested for exercising their rights.
-
- Mack Marsh, Director of Independent Living Services
for NHILC, states, "People with disabilities have
every right to full use and inclusion in their community,
regardless of that community's size." In fact,
Louisiana law provides the same rights and responsibilities
to people utilizing mobility equipment on public roadways
as any other pedestrian.
-
- The forum in Mansfield marks the first of many advocacy
events New Horizons and its partners will organize as
part of their new community involvement initiative,
which has been dubbed, 'A Declaration of Independence'
for people with disabilities. Marsh adds, "This
forum will be a great opportunity for the residents
of Mansfield to come up with positive solutions to these
and other issues, and to educate civic leaders about
the obstacles facing citizens with disabilities on a
daily basis."
